If you run a business in Chennai, you’ve probably been told to “run some ads”. The real question is where. Google Ads and Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) can both bring in leads, but they work in very different ways, and starting on the wrong one is one of the most common reasons ad budgets get wasted.
This guide explains how each platform works, where each one fits, and how to decide which to start with based on your industry, budget and goals.
The short answer
Start with Google Ads if people already search for what you sell. Start with Meta Ads if they don’t search for it yet, or if your product sells best when people can see it. Most businesses end up using both: Google captures demand that already exists, and Meta creates new demand.
How Google Ads works
Google Ads shows your ad to people who are actively searching for something, such as “dental clinic in Velachery”, “CBSE school admission Chennai” or “2BHK flats in OMR”. You pay when someone clicks. Because the person has already told Google what they want, these leads usually have high intent.
What Google Ads is good at
Reaching people who are ready to act. They’re searching now, so they’re often ready to call, book or buy.
Local searches. Searches like “near me” and area names bring in customers from the parts of Chennai or Coimbatore you serve.
Clear measurement. You can see which search terms, ads and keywords produced each call or form enquiry.
Where Google Ads struggles
No searches, no ads. If few people search for what you sell, there’s little demand for Google to capture.
Competitive keywords can be expensive. Popular categories in Chennai, such as real estate and healthcare, often have high costs per click.
Limited visual storytelling. Search ads are mostly text. YouTube and Performance Max help, but they work differently from search.
How Meta Ads works
Meta Ads shows your ads on Facebook and Instagram, including ads that open a WhatsApp chat. Instead of targeting what people search for, it targets who they are and what they’re interested in, then learns which people are most likely to respond.
What Meta Ads is good at
Creating demand. You can reach people before they start searching, which matters for new products, launches and offers.
Visual products and services. Food, fashion, property, campuses and clinics all benefit from photos, Reels and carousels.
Easy lead capture. Instant forms and Click-to-WhatsApp ads let people enquire without leaving the app.
Where Meta Ads struggles
Lead quality varies. Forms are easy to fill in, so some leads are casual. Quick follow-up and simple qualifying questions help.
Creatives wear out. The same ad shown too often stops working, so you need a steady supply of new images and videos.
Tracking needs setup. Without the Meta Pixel and Conversions API, Meta optimises for cheap clicks instead of real enquiries.

Which one should you start with? By industry
Schools and colleges
Parents search for schools and courses by board, name and location, especially during admission season. Start with Google Search for admission searches, then add Meta lead ads and Click-to-WhatsApp ads to reach parents who haven’t started searching yet and to show campus life.
Hospitals and clinics
Most patients search when they need care, such as “orthopaedic doctor near me” or “IVF clinic in Chennai”, so Google Ads usually comes first. Meta works well for health camps, awareness and specific treatments, as long as your ads follow Meta’s healthcare advertising rules.
Real estate developers
Both matter. Google captures buyers searching for “flats in Porur” or “3BHK near OMR”. Meta reaches people who aren’t searching yet but match your buyer profile, and works well for launches and site-visit offers. For real estate, how fast you follow up often matters more than which platform the lead came from.
eCommerce and D2C brands
For a new brand, Meta is often the better starting point, because people discover products while scrolling. Once people know your brand, Google Shopping and Performance Max capture those searching for your products by name.
B2B companies
Google Search reaches buyers who are looking for a supplier or service. Meta can help with retargeting and low-cost offers, but for reaching decision-makers directly, LinkedIn Ads is usually a better second channel than Meta.
How much should you budget?
There isn’t a single right number, and anyone who quotes one without looking at your market is guessing. Your ad budget depends on three things:
How competitive your market is. Some keywords and audiences cost much more per click or lead than others.
What a customer is worth to you. A property sale or an admission can justify a higher cost per lead than a low-priced product.
How many leads you need. Work backwards from your sales target and your usual lead-to-sale rate.
A practical approach is to start with one platform and spend enough to get meaningful data within four to six weeks. Then decide whether to scale it or add the second platform. Splitting a small budget across both platforms from day one usually means neither gets enough data to improve.
Mistakes we see Chennai businesses make
Boosting posts instead of running campaigns. Boosted posts are optimised for likes and reach, not enquiries.
Running ads without conversion tracking. Without it, Google and Meta optimise for clicks, and you can’t see which ads bring customers.
Sending ad traffic to the home page. A focused landing page or a WhatsApp chat usually converts better than a general home page.
Following up slowly. Leads go cold quickly. Replying within minutes, not hours, makes a big difference.
Judging results too early. Changing campaigns every few days resets the platforms’ learning. Give each change time to work.
The bottom line
If people already search for what you offer, start with Google Ads. If they need to discover you first, start with Meta Ads. Either way, set up conversion tracking before you spend, send leads to a page or chat built for them, and follow up fast.
